Jello Shot Recipes

I think I’m finally recovered from my mini Bachelorette party this weekend. We had a tiki boat for a couple hours, but partied most of the day – I was useless for the majority of Sunday, oops. It was so much fun and a great way to kick off minimony week! And day drinking and a party/tailgate are the perfect excuses to make Jello shots!

The basics of Jello are hot water, cold water, and the packet of flavored gelatin. I typically keep the hot water, but replace the cold with chilled liquor/liqueur. Half liquor (like vodka) and half liqueur (like Malibu, peach schnapps, Triple Sec) make slightly less strong shots and often yummier flavor combos!

I modeled the shots for this weekend after cocktails to help with flavor inspo! I’ve made the Fuzzy Navel ones for years, but the other two are new. I think the girls like the watermelon ones the most!

Lemon Drop Jello Shot

  • Lemonade
  • Lemon Jello
  • Vodka
  • Sugar to garnish after solid (optional)

Follow the packet instructions, heating up the lemonade for the boiling water portion and using vodka in place of the cold water! Can also use water and citrus vodka instead of lemonade. Transfer to condiment cups and chill until solid.

Spiked Watermelon Lemonade Jello Shot

  • Lemonade
  • Watermelon Jello
  • Vodka

Same instructions as above.

Fuzzy Navel Jello Shot

  • Boiling water
  • Orange Jello
  • Vodka
  • Peach schnapps

Follow preparation instructions on box, using half vodka, half schnapps in place of cold water.

Jello Shot Tips

I love making (and eating) Jello shots. My family used to make them for the annual Michigan tailgate, so we’ve tried a variety of flavors over the years and I’ve learned a few tips to share!

1. Don’t trust all recipes

Not all recipes taste good. Margaritas are hard to recreate as Jello shots. If you don’t like lime Jello, it’s not going to be good in shot form either.

2. Condiment cups are perfect containers

Lids make stacking the shots to solidify easy and then you can throw them all in a big Ziploc bag for the cooler! 2 oz cups are my preferred size. Restaurant supply stores like Gordan Foods usually have them in bulk and you can also get them on Amazon.

3. Your tools can be a game-changer

This Jello shot maker (called the Jellinator) has a tube that only squirts out the Jello liquid when pressed down on the bottom of the cups. It makes the whole process SO quick and easy and prevents messes that are common when scooping the liquid into the tiny containers. At the very least, I recommend using a pitcher with a narrow spout like this one.

4. Wipe down everything immediately

If you’ve never tried to clean solid Jello puddles after they’ve hardened, just trust me on this one. Clean up any spills and drips while it’s still liquid!

5. Freeze the liquor and chill the liqueur

The cold water replacements should be really cold, so I always put the booze in the fridge or freezer several hours before I’m mixing up the shots. This helps set the Jello faster!
