Is your jewelry box a big tangled knot of necklaces? Do you always wear the same three bracelets because you can never find any others? Are you constantly looking for the other earring? I get it! Jewelry is small and can easily get lost. I’m here to share with you simple steps you can take to organize your jewelry today. Once everything has its place, maybe it’ll stop getting lost in the chaos! Let’s get started.
Four Simple Steps to Organize Your Jewelry
Step 1: Clean Out
Before you start organizing, let’s get rid of some things. Have you worn it in the last year? Does it hold sentimental value? Is it an heirloom or worth holding on to? If the answer to all of these is no, donate or sell it. I sell a lot of jewelry (and clothes and shoes and bags) using the online consignment shop ThredUp (that link gets you $10 towards your first order!). Also, don’t be afraid to throw away jewelry that is damaged or tarnished beyond repair. No one wants to deal with junk.
Step 2: Sort
Now that you only have jewelry you are keeping, separate it into categories. These can be any categories that make sense to you! Some example categories are everyday, special occasion, colors/metal finishes, seasons, and size. I mostly keep earrings, bracelets, and necklaces separated, but I have a couple sets I keep together.
Step 3: Prioritize
What’s important to you when it comes to storing your jewelry? Maybe you wear the same ring and watch every day that need to be easy to grab. Or you have a lot of delicate necklaces that easily get tangled. Do you want it all visible and/or displayed beautifully? Choosing your main purpose for needing this organization will help you in the next step.
Step 4: Find homes for everything
Now it’s time to create a space for each item. This is key to any kind of organization – everything needs a home! Pick a drawer, surface, or box for your storage area. If you’re using a drawer, jewelry storage trays are super useful, especially for tiny earrings and rings. I ordered a few different trays on Amazon Prime knowing I’d return what I didn’t end up needing. Make sure to measure the drawer and look at dimensions!
Some containers are more functional or organize drawer space, but some jewelry storage is so beautiful! You can display pieces in clear glass boxes, on earring stands, or lined up in a glossy jewelry box. HomeGoods and Hobby Lobby usually have lots of jewelry organization options for reasonable prices.
I told you they were simple steps! If you take the time to get rid of what you don’t need, sort it out, and store your pieces based on your priorities, you’re going to be much more likely to get good use out of those fun baubles. Happy organizing!

A dedicated piece of furniture
Needing some more decor going on in my bedroom when I moved apartments last year, I found a console table from Cost Plus World Market that I fell in love with. It had shallow drawers that are perfect for small things like jewelry! There are also full length mirrors that open up to hang and store necklaces and earrings. My friend even had her husband build in a jewelry box into their closet! You’re much more likely to wear your pieces if they’re easily seen.
Drawstring bags
I have a Kendra Scott obsession. Each piece comes with a soft little drawstring bag that’s perfect for protecting delicate items and keeping things grouped in a drawer. I use them for KS sets, categories of bracelets, and statement necklaces.
Display favorite pieces
My favorite statement necklace happens to go with the colors in my bedroom, so I display it in a mirrored and gold glass box from atHome on top of my console table. I hang other necklaces on a necklace tree and lay more delicate ones in a tray in one of my drawers.
Trays and plates
Everyday jewelry that you take off to go to bed or to shower needs a home too! Maybe it’s just on a surface, but there are some really cute jewelry trays out there to keep it all contained.
